Every business likes to multiply income. Successful law firms can do this as well. There is one amazingly easy way. It is so simple it is quite often overlooked.
This quite simple, easy step concerns futuristic planning for clients. Planning? That sounds like work. Well, in addition to helping clients with their legal issues, the idea is to provide services for a fee, right? A law firm is a business after all. How can attorneys dance for their supper without producing one bead of sweat?
Did I mention this is a really simple step? I don’t think I mentioned that clients actually appreciate this step too.
At the conclusion of handling a legal matter for a client, write them a Thank You letter. Thank them for allowing you to assist them. Tell them you’d be happy to help them in the future should your services be needed.
Now, here’s that really simple, easy thing. In the Thank You letter, specifically list legal areas where you are able to help them. The areas listed can be different from the service previously rendered, or can be neatly tied in a similar vein. For example, a client whose divorce is final may not have realized she’ll need a new will prepared. Offer your firm’s services for estate planning, including a power of attorney and living will.
If a client mentioned in passing that they’re interested in establishing a business, remind them that your office can handle incorporating that new business. Or, tell them you are available to answer any questions they may have about tax law.
If your client is a business entity, remind your contact that you (or your firm) can also assist them with personal legal issues as well.
Just a few thoughtful sentences in a letter yield more income. I’ll suggest a way this step can be made even easier – put your paralegal, legal assistant or legal secretary in charge of the Thank You letters. It doesn’t get any easier than that, and you’ve paved the way for generating more income.
